The flow of the seasons is a delightful way to mark the passage of time. I see the flowers bloom and wither, dropping their seeds, according to the month. I watch birds make their nests, hatch their offspring, and fly away. I feel the heat of summer building eventually dwindling for the cooler autumn days. We mark this time as individuals witnessing the land, and we mark this time through communal gatherings. In the Jewish tradition, our holidays are stakes to call our attention away from labor and trivial details back to the source of life.
Join us in 5786/2026 to honor Elul, a month for transition, reflection, and return to self, preparing for the High Holy Days in Tishrei/September. We invite you to participate as a writer or a reader — or both! Sign up to submit a short musing on teshuvah — return, repentance, repair.
Earth Etudes for Elul will be published on Congregation Beth El’s website. Arriving in your inbox daily for one month, take them as an opportunity to sink into the season. You can subscribe to the blog here. Publishing will begin on Elul 1/August 14. If you’d like to share the Etudes on your organization’s website or social media, email earthetudes@gmail.com.
