Shabbat ShalOm! For this unique Shabbat experience, the Shabbat Rinah musicians are joined by the Om Shalom Trio, featuring award-winning artists Ranendra Das (tabla), Jessie Reagen (cello) and Abhik Mukherjee (sitar) from India and the U.S. Together we’ll create a musical Shabbat that brings Jewish melodies and classical Indian music into holy conversation. Saturday night’s concert will include Havdalah and will be followed by a dessert reception celebrating Indian and Jewish cultures, including babka and vegan chai.

Ranendra Das was born a musician–while Ranendra was still in his mother’s womb, his father sang Bengali Folk Music and recited taals to him. At age 3, Ranendra’s formal tabla training began, and has continued ever since. He has studied withmany teachers in Bangladesh and India, and has been teaching and performing tabla professionally since 1996. But Tabla is the master and so his training continues.
Ranendra graduated cum laude with his BM in Performance from the University of Bridgeport, studying Western Classical and Indian Classical music with Tabla as his major instrument. He earned his MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard College, and in 2018 founded PARA Academy of Music and Arts, LLC. In addition to teaching and performing tabla, he is a reviewer for the Connecticut Economic & Community Development Public Art and Grants Program; a member of the Arts Council of Greater New Haven; and a mentor with the Southern New England Apprenticeship Program (SNEAP), which preserves cultural knowledge by supporting teaching relationships between mentors and apprentices.
Versatile cellist Jessie Reagen has composed three works for Carolyn Dorfman Dance and was a member of Hadar’s inaugural Rising Song Institute Fellowship. Jessie can be seen performing with a variety of ensembles, pop tours, Broadway shows, singing and playing as a Jewish prayer musician, as well as a baroque cellist. Jessie has recorded for many labels and has performed at the White House, Kennedy Center, Radio City, Live 8 and on TV. She has performed with Adele, Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Billy Joel, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Savion Glover, Galeet Dardashti, Pericles Kanaris, Aly Halpert and Batya Levine among others. A seasoned educator, Jessie published a left-hand cello technique book, 60 Seconds to Excellence, by Ovation Press and is currently a teaching artist with the Philadelphia Lullaby Project. Abhik Mukherjee is an Indian classical sitar artist of the Etawah gharana known for his passion, charisma and spontaneity as a performer and improviser. He received his musical training from Pandit Arvind Parikh and Pandit Kashinath Mukherjee, themselves the disciples of the legendary Ustad Vilayat Khan. Abhik began his sitar training at the age of six in Kolkata, India under the guidance of his father. His first performance was at the age of nine at the Governor’s house , Kolkata.
He has performed and given workshops in India, the United States, Singapore, Taiwan, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Denmark, Netherlands, Suriname, Colombia, Cuba and Argentina.
His performances for the memorial of Martin Luther King Junior at Washington DC in front of President Obama, sharing the stage with Steve Wonder and Aretha Franklin, received critical acclaim. He also performed with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He has directed music for a few documentaries and played and wrote songs for mainstream Hollywood movies like On Golden Years, Low Down and A Call to Spy, etc.
He is a founding member of Brooklyn Raga Massive, a popular artist collective of NYC, and he is also the academic director of Chhandayan, a leading Indian music school of the east coast.
