SUMMARY:The Golem: An Exploration of Jewish Lore\, part 4
DESCRIPTION:Made from the earth and animated by spiritual knowledge\, the g
olem serves its creator and protects the Jewish people... for a time. From
Rabbinic writings to "The X-Files\,” from Kabbalistic teachings to "The
Terminator\," we’ll explore how this dynamic figure continues to shape
Jewish (and Western) art and fiction. Each of the three sessions will util
ize text and media clips to explore a different aspect of the golem's stor
 y. Source sheets (and a brief synopsis of preceding classes) will be offer
ed in each session. Sponsored by the Beth El Adult Education Committee.\n\
nSession 1: The Golem Created (February 20)\nWe’ll explore Rabbinic and
Kabbalistic texts on crafting a golem.&nbsp\;What are the powers (and limi
tations) of this awesome figure?&nbsp\;How did this Jewish legend begin to
influence European storytelling?\nSession 2: The Golem Revealed (February
27)\nThe golem's original calling was to protect the Jewish people. Somet
imes\, however\, that went awry... In this session\, we'll delve into mate
rials from the modern period that explore how the golem's mission was expa
nded (and diverted) as it became a danger even to its creator.\nSession 3:
The Golem Redeemed (March 6)\nIn recent years\, the golem has become a st
aple of speculative fiction. Our final conversation will explore how the g
olem has come to offer us insights into interpersonal relationships\, spir
itual quests\, and personal growth.\nSession 4:&nbsp\;\n\nAdded by popular
demand — new material that has not previously been covered.\n\nAt Beth
El and on Zoom. Click here to register. Cost: $36 for all three classes\,
but free for Beth El members (use the promo code that's being emailed to m
 embers).
