SUMMARY:Li Habibi: An Andalusi Singing Workshop with Laura Elkeslassy
DESCRIPTION:For centuries\, Jews and Muslims have shared Andalusi music acr
 oss the Iberic Peninsula and the Maghreb. In this workshop\, Laura Elkesla
 ssy will teach songs derived from the classical Andalusi canon of Morocco 
 – Al Ala - in both Arabic and Hebrew. Come experience the interweaving o
 f Arabic and Hebraic Poetry in this ancestral musical heritage.&nbsp\;\n\n

  Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency.\n\nLaura Elkeslassy is a singer\,
  actor and educator based in Brooklyn. Born and raised in Paris to a Moroc
 can and Israeli family\, Laura Elkeslassy's work draws inspiration from he
 r Moroccan roots\, exploring North-African folk\, Andalusi nubas\, and Mag
 hrebi Jewish sacred music from a feminist standpoint. In 2019\, Laura bega
 n researching Maqam (Arabic music theory) and stumbled onto a treasure tro
 ve of profound family truths. Laura’s ongoing journey of self-discovery
 –which includes forgotten ancestors\, wild synchronicities found in dust
 y old bookstores\, and the reclaiming of a lost family name–is the inspi
 rational heart of her multimedia project Ya Ghorbati: Divas in Exile.Devel
 oped in collaboration with musical director Ira Khonen Temple\, Ya Ghorbat
 i weaves together the stories of Judeo-Arab divas from the last century wi
 th original recordings and new performances of folk and sacred music.&nbsp
