SUMMARY:Discussion of author Dara Horn's Yom HaShoah presentation
DESCRIPTION:Register to attend Dara Horn's Zoom presentation at Boston Coll
ege's Center for Christian-Jewish Learning on her provocatively titled boo
k "People Love Dead Jews: Reports from a Haunted Present" and then join us
for a discussion afterwards (separate Zoom link to come).\n\n"People Love
Dead Jews" won the 2021 National Jewish Book Award and is an easy\, if di
sturbing\, read. Her thesis is that the respect for Jewish victims and pas
t characters rarely extends to us living Jews\, and she provides evidence
through 12 crisply written chapters. A sample story: when a young employee
of the much-visited Anne Frank House tried to wear his yarmulke to work h
e was told to hide it under a baseball cap. The museum's goal was "neutral
ity" and a Jew with a yarmulke might "interfere" with the museum's "indepe
ndent position." The museum finally relented after deliberating for four m
onths\, which seemed to Horn "like a rather long time for the Anne Frank H
ouse to ponder whether it was a good idea to force a Jew into hiding."\n\n
Click here to register for the talk and get the Zoom link. Check back here
for the separate Zoom link for the Beth El discussion after the talk. Spo
nsored by the Combating Antisemitism Taskforce (CAST) and the Adult Educat
 ion Committee
