Torah Class
At Congregation Beth El, we work together to provide every Jewish child a meaningful and joyful celebration of his or her coming of age. Every student, regardless of their abilities, is taught and guided as we warmly welcome them into a community of Jewish adults. At Beth El we make the experience especially meaningful with the presence of family, friends and community as we learn, grow and celebrate together.
Each fall and spring, families celebrating Bar or Bat Mitzvah in the following season are invited to participate in the Rabbi’s Torah Class. Taught by Rabbi Thomas, along with the Cantor and guest teachers, the Torah Class meets for two hours each for seven Sundays. In true seminar style, participants learn about the meaning of Bar and Bat Mitzvah, explore their deepening connections with God and Torah, and consider the power of doing Mitzvot (Commandments) in their everyday lives. Each student introduces his or her own Torah portion to the class and leads the group in a discussion about an issue or idea that arises from the text.
The highlight of the class is a weekend retreat for parents and students. In a relaxed, yet exciting setting, we deepen friendships, experience Shabbat together and create a supportive community for upcoming simchas (joyous celebrations).
The Rabbi’s Torah Class is truly a place where the hearts of the children are turned toward their parents, and the hearts of the parents toward their children.
