Children & Families

A wise rabbi once said that children talk to God in their own unique ways – if they are laughing and babbling while the adults are singing, who’s to say that their joyful sounds aren’t prayer?

Children are an important part of our community, and all ages are warmly welcomed at all Beth El services. During Shabbat services, it’s common to see a gaggle of children coloring or reading books on the floor, dancing with their parents to the rousing melodies, or marching behind the rabbi as he carries the Torah through the sanctuary.

Tot Shabbat: For those looking for a more child-focused experience, Beth El also offers a Tot Shabbat service for young children (ages 0-5) at 10:30 on selected Saturday mornings. This special program features singing, dancing, a story, and a puppet show followed by a light snack. Families can also stay for a casual playtime from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and then join the rest of the congregation for a luncheon at the conclusion of regular services. This special program is a wonderful opportunity to connect with other families with young children in a fun and spiritual atmosphere. Access the Calendar to find out when the next Tot Shabbat will be.

Kehillat Noar (youth services): Older children (ages 6-12) are invited to participate in our Kehillat Noar program.

Holidays: Children always look forward to the special family programs for the holidays.

Coming from a reform Jewish background with an emphasis on ethics, my understanding of Torah and ritual has been enriched at Beth El. The fact that my grandchildren are more observant than I is a source of great comfort.
