Religious School Projects

At the beginning of every session of Religious School, students are asked to contribute money for tzedakah (charitable giving). And every month during the year a different class votes on where the money will be sent. When it was time for 5th grade to decide, one student suggested her own favorite mitzvah: Miracle Kitchen at the Framingham Salvation Army.  The student and her father Ken are often at the Miracle Kitchen setting up tables, cooking and serving meals and then cleaning up after dinner.
After a little thought, the 5th grade decided that they would like to be part of this mitzvah team. Ken visited the classroom and explained what needed to be done and helped pick a date. So on Sunday, January 10, a team of 5th graders, joined by a 3rd grader, 4th grader, two 7th grade girls and a few parents, showed up to feed the hungry. Ken helped give assignments, and soon the kids were in action: setting the tables, cooking dinner, serving dinner, even cheerfully cleaning up afterwards. It was amazing and wonderful to see them vie for jobs that needed to be done! As Ken said, this was a great way to really do the mitzvah of feeding the hungry and showing people that we care.

Being a new member, I was surprised at how friendly everyone is at Beth El. People just walked up and introduced themselves to me as if welcoming me into their own home.
