Tzedakah Hevra–Charitable Giving Partnership

Beth El’s Tzedakah Hevra is a group of members who have joined together to pool their charitable resources, research charities, and distribute funds to Jewish charitable organizations, institutions and individuals. The Hevra was formed in 1979 to help members approach their tzedakah (charitable giving) in a meaningful way. The goals of the Hevra are:

  • to contribute to the survival and perpetuation of Jewish life;
  • to meet pressing needs;
  • and to improve the quality of life for Jews and others everywhere.

The Tzedakah Hevra is:

  • A place where we pool our funds for powerful and satisfying opportunities for giving.
  • A place to have religious conversations about money.
  • A group that challenges us to think differently about our charitable giving.

Since its inception 26 years ago, the Beth El Tzedakah Hevra has disbursed more than $450,000.

The Hevra is based on five principles:
1. It is open to all Beth El members
2. Contributions are made to Jewish organizations, institutions or individuals
3. Anonymity of each member’s contribution is carefully preserved
4. The Hevra operates democratically, with each adult member voting equally and directly on the distribution of funds.
5. The only requirement of membership is to donate 1% of the family’s income for the year to the Collective.

If you would like more information or join the mailing list for future meetings (even if you just want to check us out), please contact Jordan Oshlag at Joshlag@Earthlink.net.

The love and enthusiasm for Judaism at Beth El is contagious. It stays with me along my Jewish journey whether I'm in shul or simply sitting at home.
