A Jubilee Celebration: Beth El at 50

On July 12, 1962, a group of Jews filed incorporation papers with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and so began the story of Congregation Beth El of the Sudbury River Valley. Fifty years later, it’s time to reflect on our history and celebrate.

Plans for our jubilee year are in the works with activities and programs for member of all ages and interests. We’ve come up with 50 ways for you to participate in the 50th  in hopes that each and every member of the community will take part.

You’ll get the complete schedule at Rosh Hashanah, but for now please mark your calendar and save the dates for two banner events:

  • October 19: We begin with Shabbat Rinah – a joyful Friday evening service of song that will also be the first of a series of Social Justice Shabbats. Our very distinguished guest speaker will be Rabbi Jonah Pesner, Senior Vice President of the Union for Reform Judaism and founder of Just Congregations, the groundbreaking community organizing effort that engaged thousands in successful campaigns for health care access, affordable housing, public education, gay and lesbian rights, nursing care workers rights, and living wage.
  • May 17-18: A gala homecoming weekend, with graduates from the Beth El religious school, past members, and special guests, Rabbi Larry Kushner and Karen Kushner.

As a way to warm up for the festivities, the Friday Night Shabbat Summer Speakers Series features Beth El members sharing personal stories from our first 50 years.

You can help make this memorable Jubilee a year to remember: volunteer, attend events, reach out and join in.

We’ll be in touch with more information and opportunities soon.

In busy Boston, where it can takes weeks to make an appointment to see a friend, Beth El is an oasis where, when I make the effort, I find community, friendship, meaning and a Jewish home for my family.
